Cloudprovider AWS bijvoorbeeld, omarmt deze werkwijze en biedt developers alle resources en tools om nieuwe, baanbrekende oplossingen te bouwen. Moederbedrijf Amazon groeide door deze manier van werken zelf uit tot een van de waardevolste bedrijven ter wereld. Toch schuilt het geheim van dit succes niet in techniek, maar in het ‘andersom werken’…**   DevOps is een manier van werken waarbij de nadruk ligt op samenwerking en automatisering van veelvoorkomende handelingen, zodat een (digitale) oplossing sneller is te realiseren. Techniek staat echter niet voorop; de behoefte van de klant wel. Productontwikkeling begint dus met het vooropstellen van de klantervaring. Daarvandaan werk je terug naar de oplossing.   ## AWS LOOPT VOOROP DOOR EEN OBSESSIE VOOR KLANTGERICHTHEID EN 'OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE' De historie van Amazon laat zien waar DevOps toe kan leiden. Het bedrijf begon in 2006 onder de naam Amazon Web Services als een soort dienstenaanbieder voor bedrijven. AWS ontstond uit de noodzaak om de eigen groei te ondersteunen. Daarvoor had het bedrijf een schaalbaar, betrouwbaar en kosteneffectief datacentrum nodig. Daarbovenop begon Amazon in 2003 te denken aan de ontwikkeling van een soort besturingssysteem voor internet dat later uitmondde in Infrastructure as a Service[[1]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn1). Inmiddels verdient Amazon meer met cloudservices dan met e-commerce[[2]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn2) en is het wereldwijd marktleider op het gebied van cloudinfrastructuur of IaaS[[3]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn3). Twee oud-topmannen van het concern schreven een boek over dit succes met de titel *Working Backwards*[[4]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn4) oftewel andersom werken (zoals gezegd: vanuit de klantbehoefte naar de oplossing werken). Ze schrijven dat klantgerichtheid voor Amazon een obsessie is. Alles is gericht op ‘operational excellence’. Omdat er volgens topman Jeff Bezos ‘geen klant is die hogere prijzen wil of een trage levering’.   ## ZET OOK KLANTBEHOEFTEN VOOROP Maar hoe pas je dit concept nu met succes toe? Volgens het schrijversduo heb je er in ieder geval een bepaalde mentaliteit voor nodig: je moet risico’s durven nemen, het experiment niet schuwen en niet bang zijn om te falen. Ze hebben ook een praktische tip: schrijf voordat je een businesscase opstelt een ‘persbericht’. Benoem daarin de voordelen van de dienst of het product en doe er een lijstje bij met antwoorden op te verwachten vragen (FAQ’s)[[5]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn5). Zo krijg je de klantbehoefte extra scherp in beeld. Bij Netflix hoef je zelf geen films meer aan te schaffen. Met één druk op de knop kies je uit een enorm aanbod; je zou zelfs vier jaar non-stop moeten kijken om alles te zien[[6]](https://www.cloudnation.nl/inspiratie/blogs/de-kracht-van-andersom-werken-devops-volgens-aws#_ftn6). Dit is mogelijk dankzij ondersteunende techniek van in dit geval de AWS-cloud. Die biedt de infrastructuur, ongelimiteerde opslagcapaciteit en flexibiliteit om miljoenen gebruikers te bedienen. Als een serie plots enorme aantallen kijkers trekt, schalen systemen automatisch op. Zo ondervindt niemand performanceproblemen. Als iedereen de afleveringen heeft gezien, schaalt Netflix weer af. De kracht van AWS zit behalve in de krachtige infrastructuur ook in het grote aanbod aan tools en services. Door de merkonafhankelijke werkwijze kun je applicaties van verschillende leveranciers gebruiken (*best of breed*). Door de jaren heen zijn bovendien continu verbeteringen doorgevoerd, waardoor van kinderziektes allang geen sprake meer is. Veel tools zijn bovendien bijzonder ‘developer-vriendelijk’ wat deze cloud aantrekkelijk maakt voor organisaties die ook op de DevOps manier willen werken.
